1920’S & HERRINGBONE FLOORS

Sarah

This apartment in Sweden perfectly demonstrates how to modernise a traditional space. Original elegant features remain from when it was build in the 1920’s, including the natural herringbone oak wood floor, wall-mouldings, iron-cast radiators, built-in wardrobes and deep windowsills. However, it is the subtle-yet-highly-effective design features such as the neutral colour scheme, natural light and brightness (courtesy of the large windows), high ceilings and modern furniture that together establish a very modern and airy feel in the classic 1920’s apartment. Essentially, there is a perfect balance between the old and new- creating a beautiful sense of harmony in the space that is very desirable and beautiful.

To achieve the look, select our Kährs Oak AB wood flooring in a classic herringbone pattern. This wood floor is made from clean-grade oak with some colour variation and small knots with a matt finish. A perfect high-quality wood floor with a traditional and elegant look that we love.

WALNUT MONTREAL

Sarah

You know by now that we love the combination of white walls, white doors and white skirting set against wood floor. And this renovated apartment in Gothenburg is a great example of how natural walnut flooring in particular conveys a true sense of luxury and cosiness in a home.

Kährs Walnut Montreal is a 3-strip walnut wood floor with a lot of character. The natural depth and variations in the wood grains, combined with a silky-smooth surface finish, creates a deeply layered effect that just keeps getting better over time.

Fun fact: did you know that in ancient times, people believed that back aches could be relieved by carrying a walnut in its shell in the pocket?

LET THE LIGHT IN

Sarah

This lovely apartment in central Stockholm is not more than a large studio apartment, but with some creative styling, these owners have been able to transform the home into an airy 1 bedroom apartment. We’ve seen an increase in inner walls/partitions made from glass with black trims that creates a divide for privacy while allowing for the space to feel open, airy and bright. The black trim not only has an aesthetically edgy feel, but also serves a safety purpose (I think we’ve all walked into an all too clear glass partition once or twice in our lives, right?). For added privacy, one idea would be to hang a curtain or blind on one side of the glass partition that can easily be drawn closed or open.

As for the colour scheme, this is an extremely important element when working with smaller spaces. Maximising natural light is key, and creating an illusion of added height and depth is something that will certainly make all the difference in enlarging a space- something which is perfectly portrayed in this apartment. The colour palette is muted, the walls and main elements are white, the “fuss” is kept minimal and all the focus is on the 1-strip wood floor (such as Kährs Oak Cornwall), which visually helps to elongate the room by directing the viewer’s eye toward the natural light source. Installing a wood floor in this manner will also enhance the look of the wood grain and maximise the natural wood feeling, as it causes the light to bounce off the floor beautifully. Et voilà, you have a larger space!

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND

Sarah

This spectacular penthouse located in the popular area of Greenwich Village in Manhattan (New York City) offers a spectacular 550 sqm living area. The dark wood floor creates a beautiful contrast to the brightness of the large spaces, generating that beautiful elegance that only a dark wood floor can.

We are big lovers of Kährs new floor Oak Nouveau Tara classic 1-strip/plank floor where the natural wood characteristics has been enhanced with microbevelled edges and brushing topped with a dark brown stain. Combined with white walls and skirting/mouldings, you will immediately create an elegant space that is timeless, certain to last for generations.

SAND

Sarah

This apartment in central Stockholm has a real tranquil quality that soothes our souls. And we’re especially loving the wood flooring, Ash Sandvig by Kährs Sand Collection.

A light, exclusive 1-strip floor with nature’s own design with knots and a lively structure. A characteristic is its bi-colour pattern with a soft white matt lacquer. The darker core in ash creates fantastic patterns and makes this a very special floor.

DOWNTOWN DESIGN OPENING

Sarah

Downtown Design opened its doors yesterday, and the hall quickly filled up with aficionados from the crème de la crème of Dubai’s design society. We were really excited to see so many spectators around the Craftsmanship at The Workshop stand, where two Danish master craftsmen crafted two of the biggest icons in the world of interior design: the Egg Chair (Republic of Fritz Hansen) and the Wishbone Chair /CH24 (Carl Hansen & Søn). We were especially happy and proud to see two icons being crafted right on top of our very beloved Oak Hultaby wood flooring from Kährs Craftsman Collection.

We love timeless Scandinavian design and craftsmanship!

WELCOME TO SCANDIWOOD

Sarah

Something important to keep in mind when designing a space is the kind of style you want to portray. For instance, a light wood floor immediately makes for a more sleek, fresh and Scandinavian style. Darker wood on the other hand, makes for a more colonial and elegant feel, while cherry or redder woods generally make for more classic interiors.

We are loving the combination of raw ash wood (similar to Kährs Ash Skagen) and Scandinavian designer furniture seen in this home below. This place from Folkhem is styled perfectly with nice gradients of whites and greys. When can we move in?

So what feeling do you strive to achieve in your home? Regardless of which you choose, Feng Shui recommends having a strong wood element within your environment in order for it to feel more harmonious and balanced.
