LUCIA CELEBRATION
December 13, 2015
Alongside Midsummer, the Lucia celebrations represent one of the foremost cultural traditions in Sweden, with their clear reference to life in the peasant communities of old: darkness and light, cold and warmth. Lucia is an ancient mythical figure with an abiding role as a bearer of light in the dark Swedish winters (ref). St. Lucy’s Day, or Lucia, is typically celebrated on December 13, a day once coinciding with the Winter Solstice- the shortest day of the year. Therefore it has become a celebration of light.
Last night we invited some special guests to experience a traditional Lucia celebration at the Nordic Homeworx Showroom in Sidra Tower, Dubai. Damkören SALT, a professional female choir from Sweden, performed as Lucia and her maidens while our guests enjoyed freshly baked lussebullar(saffron buns) and pepparkakor (gingerbread cookies) along with a hot cup of tea or coffee.
It was a magical evening and we are so happy we got to enjoy a typical Scandinavian winter celebration here in Dubai!
